Quadrooter Exploit: Everything you need to know about
What is Quadroot? Is your phone affected by these Quadrooter Exploits? How to Stay Safe! That’s what this article deals with.
A little while back a security check firm named ‘Check Point’ uncovered a vulnerability on phones using Qualcomm chips, That is ‘Quadroot’.
Why name it Quadroot? Well it is four flaws or vulnerabilities of Android devices with Qualcomm hardware inside. This was found in core that handles traffic, controls communication in phones with these hardware.
These exploits could potentially allow hackers to take control of your device, gain access to your data and additionally ‘Check Point’ claims that 900 million android devices are vulnerable or infected. (Seems scary, right?) No doubt this took a lot of media attention.
Sooooo let’s talk about it…
Here are the facts,
The Quadroot exploits were discovered back in April by this firm and then reported to Qualcomm and Google. Three out of four exploits got fixed with google’s August security patch and the other one will be fixed with upcoming September security patch additionally Qualcomm is also working with some manufacturers to directly address the issues.
So, there is a chance you might be protected already! but how do you confirm that? Well, ‘Check Point’ has an app that scans your phone and let’s you know if you are vulnerable or not. This app can be directly downloaded from Play Store Here is the Link to that – QuadRooter Scanner
It will show you like this. Now what if you find out that you are vulnerable like mentioned before 900 million devices are infected so, Odds are a lot of our phones might be vulnerable to these exploits, What next?
We need to wait for the manufacturers to push out Google security patch and we’ve already seen some brands saying exactly what they don’t wanna do; also, if you have less expensive ordinary phone then the odds of getting the fixes are not good but you don.t have to panic (not yet!). Because Odds of getting affected by apps from the Play Store are very low. Google has known about these exploits like mentioned before since April. So any chances of google letting apps using these exploits remain on the Play Store are next to non existent.
So if you are someone who only downloads the apps from Play Store, You should be good(Don’t worry about it). But let’s say for some reason you download and install .apk file; Let’s generally not recommend it but sometimes it is necessary and you need to sideload it (like you want to play Pokemon Go or Download new Leaked Nexus Launcher). But even for apps installed from unknown sources, Google verifies them. So if you don’t see a pop-up saying ‘Malicious app’ , ‘Do not install’ or something like that, You should be good.
It is always good to institute some common sense, An apk from trusted websites are good but from shady websites like you never heard of anytime are not good. So use your common sense and stay safe. 🙂
